Drones under 250 grams

Short answer

You don’t need a drone certificate for a drone under 250 grams. If it has a camera, though, you must register as a drone operator and put the number on the drone. And unless it is a toy, the flight must be insured.

Do I need to register?

  • With a camera or another sensor: yes, you must register as a drone operator.
  • Without a sensor: no.
  • Classified as a toy: no, even if it has a camera.

Visitors from other EU or EASA countries use the registration from their home country. How to register.

Do I need a drone certificate?

No. If the drone weighs under 250 grams with its camera and equipment, no certificate is required. You must still read the manual and follow both the European and the Danish rules.

Watch the weight

The limit applies to the drone with everything fitted. If propeller guards, an extra camera or a heavier battery take it over 250 grams, the rules for heavier drones apply, including the certificate. Try a sample question on exactly this.

Insurance

In Denmark, drone flights must be insured unless the drone is a toy. For drones under 250 grams that are flown only for personal or hobby use and can’t go faster than 19 m/s, there is no fixed minimum amount, but you must still be adequately covered. Ask your insurer whether your home or personal liability policy covers it.

Age

If you are under 15, you may only fly drones under 250 grams on your own. There is no age limit for toy drones marketed for children.

Where-to-fly rules still apply

Light drones must also stay below 120 metres, within sight and outside drone zones. You may fly over individual people, though you should avoid it, and never over assemblies of people. See where you can fly.
