The A2 certificate
A2 lets you fly C2 drones closer to people. Here are the requirements, the self-training and how the exam works.

Short answer
What does A2 allow?
- Flying C2-marked drones under 4 kg in subcategory A2.
- Keeping at least 30 metres horizontally from uninvolved people, and following the 1:1 rule above 30 metres.
- Keeping just 5 metres horizontally when the drone is in low-speed mode (slower than 3 m/s).
- Applying to fly in geographical drone zones. Permission is only given to A2 holders, and only if the owner of the area agrees.
You may still never fly over assemblies of people.
Getting A2, step by step
- 1Get A1/A3 firstYou need the A1/A3 theory certificate before you can sit the A2 exam.
- 2Complete practical self-trainingYou practise set manoeuvres with a drone and then declare that you have completed the self-training.
- 3Pay Trafikstyrelsen’s feeLog in with MitID and pay DKK 130 (2026) for 3 attempts. A case number arrives in your Digital Post.
- 4Book with an exam providerChoose one of the providers recognised by Trafikstyrelsen. Book no later than the day before.
- 5Pass the examThe exam has 40 questions. It can take up to 72 hours for the certificate to arrive.
Practical self-training
Before the theory exam you must complete practical self-training: set exercises covering take-off, flight and landing in normal and abnormal conditions. Trafikstyrelsen publishes a guide to the self-training on droneregler.dk.
The self-training is subject to oversight and you may be selected for a check. If Trafikstyrelsen finds it unlikely that you did the training, your certificate can be withdrawn.
The exam
- 40 questions. The exam used to have 30 questions, but now has 40.
- With a recognised provider. Trafikstyrelsen lists them on droneregler.dk. Some run the exam online, others at locations around the country.
- No course required. Providers may not require you to take a course first.
- Two payments. DKK 130 to Trafikstyrelsen for 3 attempts, plus the provider’s own price.
See the total cost in the cost guide.
The A2 syllabus
On top of the A1/A3 syllabus, EASA says the A2 exam covers in particular:
- Meteorology: wind and turbulence in built-up areas, temperature, visibility and air density.
- Drone performance: mass and centre of gravity, securing payloads, and batteries.
- Ground risk: low-speed mode, judging distance from people, and the 1:1 rule.
Where can you fly?
With A2, some exceptions apply in the red drone zones, for example around air ambulance sites, and you need A2 to fly in a seaplane base’s airspace. The conditions are shown for each zone on the map, so always check it before you fly. See where you can fly.
Renewal
The A2 certificate is valid for five years. You renew it by retaking the A2 exam with a recognised provider, and your A1/A3 certificate is renewed automatically at the same time.
